The enhancement of the local history (Part One)
Celebrating the Migration Experience…
We have already seen how returnees to their places of origin have created associations and meeting points, but various initiatives have emerged to “celebrate the migration experience,” supported by both local and central governments.
Yuhu honors its migration history: a sort of “memorial stele” at the village entrance lists the different cities where locals have emigrated (Turin is included!). Visitors are greeted by a couple whose image vividly recalls similar representations of emigrants from our own past, because – we must remember – Italy itself has a long and significant history of emigration.
Today, the area maintains strong ties with our country in particular, and… not just because of coffee! For example, it has established a collaboration with Slow Food, which it showcases in various ways…
It is not uncommon for emigrants to maintain strong ties with their homeland. In one of the images shown here, you can see a memorial stele placed at the entrance of a bridge named “Bridge of Love for the Homeland.” As explained by the inscription on the stone, the bridge was funded by Hu Yizhong (胡一中), who emigrated to Europe in 1983 and is the son of former village mayor Hu Xidu (胡希读), as a tribute to his father who passed away in 2016.
