Telling the world: maps and geographical texts in 17th-century China

On February 27, 2024, Professor Paolo De Troia, a scholar of Chinese language and philology at the University of Rome La Sapienza, delivered a lecture at the University of Turin titled “Telling the World: Maps and Geographical Texts of 17th-Century China.” Professor De Troia guided students on a journey through the geography of cultural exchanges between China and Europe, highlighting the significant role of Jesuit missionaries. He also encouraged them to reflect on how encounters with others have led to perspective shifts, sometimes revolutionary, on both sides.
The event took place as part of the project “Proposals for Innovative Teaching in Chinese Language and Culture Studies: From Geography Education to Language Teaching from an Intercultural Perspective,” funded by the Grant for Internalization from the Department of Humanities at the University of Turin.
